A Tale of Two Tours

Transitioning to a new version of a familiar product can be disconcerting. To ease our users' way, I wrote different tours depending on what each users previous Wix experience had been. Figuring out the messaging for each was an interesting challenge.

The Challenge

We introduced a new version of the Wix Editor (Editor 2.0), and migrated all our users to this new version. But these users came from two different products - ADI and the previous version of the Editor. Each product had a different target audience and a different set of features in common with the new Editor.

The Solution - Two separate tours

We decided that each group of users had different concerns and different starting assumptions, and therefor it was best to provide two separate tours of  Editor 2.0.

Introduction

For ADI users, Editor 2.0 felt like a whole new Editor. For Editor users, it was just an update of their old Editor.

Big new features

The biggest difference between ADI and the new Editor was that new interface was drag and drop and provided complete customization of content, elements and layout. This was not a difference relevant Editor users - they already had this. Editor users needed an introduction to sections, which already existed in ADI, and how sections interacted with the features they already knew.

Common Ground

In some cases, we wanted to highlight features that were relevant to both groups of users.

The Impact

Having two separate tours addressed the needs of the different groups of users, and made sure that the transition to Editor 2.0 was as smooth as possible.
